The Ducks and Wildlife
of Holland Park
Our Friendly Holland Park Neighbors
Holland Park isnβt just a home for residentsβitβs a welcoming place for local wildlife, too. Our scenic pond hosts a delightful community of ducks, birds, and occasional turtles, making everyday moments uniquely peaceful and enjoyable. The gazebo overlooking the pond is a perfect place to quietly observe wildlife or enjoy morning coffee. Steps away, the South Creek Greenway Trail invites leisurely strolls, birdwatching, or relaxing bike rides. We encourage our residents to enjoy, respect, and responsibly interact with this special, natural element of Holland Park life.

Meet the Ducks Who Call Holland Park Home
Our pond draws a rotating cast of waterfowl year-round. Some stay all season, others stop in during migrationβbut every visit feels like a mini wildlife show.
Mallard (Resident) - All year
The bright-green headed males do most of the quacking; females are quieter.
Wood Duck - Spring β early Summer
One of the few ducks that nest in tree cavitiesβwatch for ducklings leaping safely to the ground.
Blue-winged Teal - Late Summer β Fall migration
Look for the powder-blue wing patch when they take flight.
Gadwall - Winter
Subtle gray-brown plumage but surprisingly graceful on the water.
Northern Pintail - Spring & Fall fly-overs
Sleek silhouette and long βpinβ tail feathers give them their name.
Birds Beyond the Pond
Step onto the South Creek Greenway Trail and youβll quickly add to your wildlife-list. Keep an eye (and ear) out for these frequent flyers:
β’ Cardinal β bright red males, melodic whistle year-round
β’ Blue Jay β bold blue plumage, unmistakable βjay-jayβ call
β’ Carolina Chickadee β tiny acrobat; listen for βfee-bee-fee-bayβ song
β’ American Goldfinch β flashes of yellow; peaks in midsummer
β’ Great Blue Heron β slow, majestic wingbeats over the pond
β’ Red-tailed Hawk β circling high with a raspy βkree-eeeβ scream

Responsible Wildlife Etiquette
Share the HabitatβKeep It Healthy
β’ Feed ducks corn, peas, or grainsβnever bread.
β’ Keep dogs leashed near the pond and trail.
β’ Observe nests and burrows from a distance; zoom in with your camera, not your feet.
β’ Take out all trashβmicroplastics harm aquatic life.
β’ Use nighttime patio lights sparingly; many birds navigate by the stars.
Small daily choices keep our feathered and furry neighbors thriving.
